Six-foot, 175 pound Glenview National fireballer John Barnefield struck out 15 batters and hurled a no-hitter in his team's semifinal game against Marion -- and lost 7-1. Barnefield walked 13 batters, hit two others, and threw five wild pitches, while two Glenview catchers were charged with a total of 12 passed balls. None of the three balls that were hit fair by Marion went past the pitcher's mound, yet the downstate team moved on to the state title game. Meanwhile, Westlawn's John Kappel allowed only a two-out, two-strike, sixth inning bloop single down the right field line in his team's 2-0 semifinal victory. Westlawn then rolled past Marion 9-2 in the title game.
