Dick Langert drew a bases-loaded walk to snap a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning, and then Mike Powers put the game out of reach with a grand slam home run down the right-field line to propel Westlawn to its second state title. Powers, who had pulled a leg muscle when running to first base on an eighth inning groundout, had to walk around the bases following his two-out blast. Westlawn pitcher Mike Koszela celebrated his thirteenth birthday with a 12 strikeout, five hit complete game, while Bradley-Bourbonnais starter Al Longtin fanned 11 in 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

As the winner of the two-team District 2 tournament, Tuscola was placed in the District 17 semifinals. Virginia won that tournament.
