In perhaps the most controversial ending to an Illinois title game, South Holland South pitcher Ray Thompson induced Jamal Campbell into a groundout to preserve a 1-0 shutout victory that gave South Holland its first state championship. With one out in the sixth inning and South Holland leading 1-0, Jake Zajc doubled down the rightfield line, and then advanced to third on a foul out.
It was on the foulout that the controversy began. As Campbell stepped into the batter's box and Thompson toed the pitching rubber, Thompson wanted to appeal that Zajc had left second base too soon on the sacrifice fly. However, instead of stepping back off the pitching rubber, he moved forward toward home plate and faked several throws to the plate before turning and throwing to second base. Despite vehiment protests by the B-B National coaching staff, the umpires did not call a balk. On the first pitch he delivered to the plate. Thompson appeared to balk again, but despite B-B's continued protests, no call was made. Campbell then grounded out to end the game.
Both Thompson and B-B starter Bill Simulick were masterful throughout the game. Thompson struck out seven and allowed just two hits, while Simulick tossed a four hitter and struck out nine. Earlier in the tournament, South Holland curveballing lefthander Mark Mulder scattered three hits, struck out 13, and hit a game-winning home run to lead South Holland to a 2-1 victory over B-B National. Many of the Bradley-Bourbonnais players were later members of the Bradley-Bourbonnais team that won the 1992 Pony League World Series.

NOTE: Champaign Robeson defeated Taylorville Red Bland 9-6 in Game 3 of the Section 1 Tournament, but LL officials awarded Taylorville the forfeit victory when it was discovered that the Robeson team was also playing in another tournament at the time of the Section 1 Tournament. Robeson played in an invitational tournament in Tuscola on the morning of their Red Bland game, and then played Taylorville in the evening.
NOTE: District 14 was dissolved following the 1986 International Tournament and no longer exists in Illinois.
