Brookfield National 9, Chicago Jackie Robinson West 2 (TITLE)
Brookfield National squeezed into the state tournament by winning three games by a total of four runs in the Section 2 Tournament, and then opened state tourney play with three consecutive one-run wins. The last of these -- an epic 1-0 12-inning struggle against Jackie Robinson West in the winner's bracket finals -- was the longest game in Illinois State Tournament history. After dropping a tense 2-1 rematch to JRW, Brookfield thumped the Chicagoans in the title game.
In that title game, Brookfield National raced to a 7-0 lead after three innings, pounded out 10 hits, and never looked back. Title game pitcher Andy Pakosta allowed only two unearned sixth-inning runs in his two-hit, 11 strikeout performance, while also drilling a solo home run and driving in three runs.
Prior to the title game loss, JRW's pitchers had allowed only two runs in 30 innings of tournament play. Brookfield National also won the Illinois State Tournament in the major girls softball division in 1996.
