Summary:

Connellsville and Berwick met in a rematch of the 1972 state championship game, and Connellsville got revenge for its defeat in the earlier meeting by defeating Berwick 6-1 to win its second consecutive state title. Connellsville jumped to an early 2-0 lead against Berwick, then methodically extended the advantage while riding the four hit pitching of Terry Newell.

Connellsville scored twice in the first inning. Greg Lonigro and Joe Bailey singled, and Lonigro scored on a fielder's choice. Tim Bishop's bloop single to right then scored Baily. Connellsville escaped jams in the second (a double play) and third (stranding runners at second and third) innings before later extending the lead. Lonigro and Bailey had RBI singles in the fourth, Newell doubled home a run in the fifth, and catcher Randy Sova launched a solo home run in the sixth.

In the semifinals, Connellsville and Berwick both used big second inning rallies to eliminate their opponents. Connellsville struck for five second inning runs in ousting Mount Union 9-0. 6'1" pitcher West Turner (he threw a two-hitter) opened the inning with a homer, and Bailey capped it with a two run double to right field. Tim Bishop later added a homer for Connellsville.

Berwick right fielder Ron Pruitt celebrated his 12th birthday by homering and driving in three runs in his team's 5-1 win over Plymouth Township. Pruitt's two run homer in the second opened the scoring, and was followed by a bases-loaded single by Anthony Cicini. Winning pitcher Keith Seely struck out three and was backed by an error-free defense.
