Summary:
Eagle Pass American Little League rebounded from an opening day loss with four consecutive wins to capture the Texas West state tournament in Fort Worth.
Eagle Pass dropped their opener, 11-3 to Edinburg Red Little League, then won four games in as many days to earn their first-ever Texas state championship in the major baseball division. Eagle Pass avenged their opening round loss with 12-7 and 5-4 victories in the championship round.
Since the Texas state tournament was split into East and West divisions in 2003, Eagle Pass has won every Texas District 37 championship, and has reached at least the sectional championship game in all but three years. In 2009, the border team's only two international tournament losses came at the hands of eventual Little League World Series qualifier McAllister Park American Little League from San Antonio.
Eagle Pass broke through to the next level of tournament play by rallying through the bottom bracket at Fort Worth Westside's Kelly Field. The Section 3 champions defeated Lubbock Western Little League, 5-2, in their first elimination contest, then sent off Wichita Falls Little League by a 13-1 score to earn the rematch with Edinburg.
Eagle Pass American advanced to the Southwestern Region tournament following their victory at the state tournament, and the Texas West champions won two of their three pool contests to advance to the semifinal round. Eagle Pass dispatched Arkadelphia (Arkansas) Little League, 5-4, in the semifinal round, but were edged, 5-3, by Texas East champion Pearland White Little League in the region championship game.
